THE WEEKEND WRAP – Broadsiding – Ben Clifton

 Weekend Wrap

G1 Review

Golden Rose Rosehill Race 8 – won by Broadsiding

Date: 28/9/24

Race Overview – Race has rated pretty well without going huge. This has always looked like a vintage year of 3yo’s and this is the best of them.

Horses to Follow:

  • Broadsiding – Market backed this horse as if it was the best horse in Australia. It just might be as this was his oppositions chance to beat him and they couldn’t. Could win everything.
  • Traffic Warden – Good horse, good effort. Has gone up a level this time in.
  • Mayfair – Career peak here. I struggle to find a G1 race that he could win despite his quality. Maybe a Sir Rupert Clarke would suit best?
  • Storm Boy – Went great. He may not be the world beater that everyone (including me) thought, but he fought hard here. Is another horse who I struggle to find a race to place him in to get a G1.

G1 Review

Manikato Stakes Moonee Valley Race 7 – won by Southport Tycoon.

Date: 27/09/24

Race Overview – They went really quick early here which they tend to do at the Valley. Overall the race has rated below average for the class.

Horse to Follow:

  • Southport Tycoon – Great training effort, Blinkers went on first time and was coming out of a high rating race won by Joliestar. Great placement, but I can’t see him being an Everest chance. Hard to hold that rating off a $21 SP.
  • Growing Empire – Run of the race, chased a hot speed and entitled to give up. Coolmore at his mercy.
  • I Wish I Win – Going beautifully. Moonee Valley just doesn’t suit his pattern. Can win the Everest.
  • Estriella – A girlfriend of mine that I have to break up with.

Highlight Races from the Weekend

Feehan Stakes Moonee Valley Race 4 – won by Pride Of Jenni.

Date: 27/09/24

Race Overview – One for the purists. Early speed obviously quick but they sustained it to the line. Good effort to run good time with small field.

Horses to follow:

  • Pride Of Jenni – That rating is probably a length or 2 off her best but a horse of her pattern should improve through the campaign. She can win the Cox Plate.
  • Mr Brightside – He has run well but I cannot see him winning a Cox Plate with Pride of Jenni setting the pace.

Maiden Winner/s of the Week:

Date: 26/9/24

Geelong Race 4 – won by Catoggio.

Why: Went out hard and came home well. Good race.

Horses to follow from the race:

  • Catoggio – Gelded going into this. Flown here and is a good horse.
  • Cora Lynn – 2 runs back from a spell have been in good rating races. Ready to break through.
  • Sociable – Good return. Maiden winner in waiting.

Other Notable Horses/Jockeys:

  • Pope Cody – Good Qld horse with a high ceiling.
  • Ivy Dexstress – Rated well in her maiden.
  • Gallant Son – Massive run first up when race shape didn’t suit. Needs a jockey change.

THE FORECAST: NEW JOCKEY, WHO DIS? Racing can be a cruel game sometimes and the sacking of jockey Declan Bates from his long-time dance partner Pride of Jenni is a reminder of that. Horse and jockey splits happen every day, but high-prof
