THE PUNTING MONOLOGUE - LISTEN

THE WEEKEND WRAP – Craig – Ben Clifton

 Weekend Wrap

Star Performer of the week

Caulfield Race 2 – won by Craig

Date: 31/08/24

Race Overview – They ran this race before the wind took ahold of the day so I wouldn’t be comparing times to laaater in the day but this race has gone well regardless. Out pretty quick and ran home well. Good margins.

Horses to Follow:

  • Craig – Got the most upside of all the runners in this race. Has plenty of options, could aim up at a Toorak or pick off lower hanging fruit.
  • The Open – Just continually runs in good races. Think he ends up a Group horse. Just might be next campaign.

G1 Review

Memsie Stakes – Won by Pinstriped

Date: 02/09/24

Race Overview – They went out fast particularly as the wind had picked up by this time. Have to dissect this race as some horse were suited, where as, some weren’t

  • Pinstriped – Worlds aligned for him to win this race. Had the advantage of race fitness, camped just in behind with cover from the wind. Started $14 so will be completely against next start.
  • Mr Brightside – Was only first up here and went well. Can’t help but think the old Mr Brightside would have beaten Pinstriped. Is he cooked? Maybe.
  • Pride of Jenni – A lot will bin her off this but she led at a good clip into a ferocious wind and was first up. Plenty against and don’t drop off her yet.

Highlight Races from the Weekend

Rosehill Race 7 – won by Autumn Glow

Date: 02/09/24

Race Overview – Overall time was inside standard and last sectional was ok. Wanted to highlight this race as I think the winner is special.

Horses to follow:

  • Autumn Glow – Won completely against the inside bias. It was an ugly watch but get her on a fairer track and she destroys them. Top class.
  • Iron Hawk – Strange run but last 200m was very good. Looks like 1600m will suit.

Rosehill Race 6 – won by Storm Boy.

Date: 02/09/24

Race Overview – Moderate early tempo and a sprint home. Some nice horses in this race.

Horses to Follow:

  • Storm Boy – smashed in the market, mainly due to the track bias on the day, but was impressive nonetheless. Good horse but what is his race?
  • Gatsbys – very, very plain. Hard to make any excuses as he just didn’t finish the race off.

Maiden Winner/s of the Week:

Date: 27/8/24

Seymour Race 3 – won by Cocobill,

Why: They went out slowly but motored home. Good margins.

Horses to follow from the race:

  • Cocobill – Hard not to be impressed by this win. The VRC Derby is crying out for a horse to jump out of the ground in the next couple of months (Red Aces is favourite? Why).. this could be the horse.
  • King Czar – can win a maiden next start.

Other Notable Horses/Jockeys:

  • Ginnivan – Another Perth sprinter showing Group ability. Nice horse.
  • Another Wil – not entitled to win from where he was. Really, really, really good horse.
  • And Found – Good rating in a maiden.
  • Fridge Monster – Another good maiden winner.
