THE PUNTING MONOLOGUE - LISTEN

Spring Champion Stakes Preview

The Spring Champion Stakes a Group 1 contest for three-year-olds over 2000m has been a key tool to Derby success in the past and could well be again here. Here’s my preview for the feature at Randwick.

Renaissance Woman looks on the up and was impressive when winning at Caulfield. Can run the 2000m convincingly and on a wet surface. Looks a progressive type and finds a race with speed here to storm over the top of them again. On top hope for an upset against the boys.

Elliptical was terrific in the Caulfield Guineas, and the rise in distance looks to suit him. Draws the rails which will allow Blake Shinn to be more positive with him making him very appealing on paper. Has bypassed the Cox Plate in favour of this and looks to be chasing a Group 1 feature to solidify his career as a stallion. Genuine winning chance.

Promitto was good in the Craven last start behind Cascadian and Just Folk and comes here off the quick backup. Should be capable of running the distance and I think is well and truly capable of being competitive in this class on the back of that performance. Each way hope.

Williamsburg made up some ground in the Gloaming and should relish stepping up to the 2000m for the first time. Classy horse with a promising future and should be able to sit closer from an inside draw. Will be hunting them down again and a win wouldn’t surprise here.

Coppleson is an interesting runner here. He was only fair last start but did drop in distance from the 1800 metres to the mile. He’s the full brother to Te Aku Shark who was placed in a Cox Plate, and I think him stepping up to the 2000 will benefit him greatly. 2 runs back was good in open grade behind White Marlin who came down and swamped a good field at Caulfield. Has been overlooked here off one average run and if can improve represents ridiculous place value.

She’s Extreme is a classy filly and is ready for 2000m. Loves Randwick and grows a leg in the wet. If can get a soft lead will be in it for a long way I feel and is a good each-way hope against the boys.

On top hope is Renaissance Woman to beat Eliptical and Williamsburg for the minors with Promitto in for fourth.
