THE PUNTING MONOLOGUE - DOOMBEN CUP LISTEN

THE WEEKEND WRAP

The Weekend Wrap by Ben Clifton.

GROUP 1 RACING:

Doomben Race 8 – Doomben 10,000

Tempo: Solid Tempo.

Race Overview: Race was run at a good tempo. Bit of a bunched finish but I think some of these horses have improvement going forward. Going to be a key form race for the Kingsford Smith Cup and the Stradbroke Hcp.

Bella Nipotina ($7) – Last 3 runs had all been in different states so it was hard to know whether she was going to produce her best after all the travelling. Rarely runs poorly and this is as good as she goes. Seems to need it wet to produce her best.

I Wish I Win ($2.20) – Amazed that Bella Nipotina went past him after he hit the front. Only going to be better at his next run.

Espiona ($5) – As good a run as the first 2 home. Going well.

Last Word: Form will hold up out of this race going deeper into the carnival.

BELLA NIPOTINA  needs the wet to produce her best.

DOOMBEN:

Doomben Race 9 – Rough Habit Plate

Tempo: Field spread out but they weren’t going that quick.

Race Overview: They ran home well here and this will be the key form race for the Qld Derby.

Tannhauser ($3.90) – Ran into a very vulnerable Autumn Angel and made the most of it. Well backed and won well. Legitimate chance in the Derby.

Autumn Angel ($2.50) – Was 35 days between runs here dropping 400m in distance and you have to remember she was on the 7-day back up last start. She was also drawn wide so going to be further back than she liked but ran a huge race. She is your Qld Derby winner.

Last Word: Autumn Angel will start in the $2.20-$2.80 range in the Derby if she gets there in one piece.

TANNHAUSER  is legitimate chance in the Derby.

FLEMINGTON:

Race to Follow: Race 5 won by Losesomewinmore.

Why: Race has rated well for the class but there are plenty of horses who drew inside gate who you can be forgiving of. Also, I would be harsh on horses who drew wide and had first access to the fast lane.

Horses to Follow from the race:

  • Losesomewinmore – Probably have to mark it down a bit due to it being in the right part of the track but it had previously shown an ability to run a rating. Good horse.
  • Sioux Spirit – Went well on debut and travelled nicely into this. Good horse and barrier beat it.
  • Rich Lover – Got beaten a long way but I am happy to forgive. Might be a sneaky one next start.

LOSESOMEWINMORE  is a good horse.

MAIDEN WINNER OF THE WEEK:

Date: 15/5/24

Ipswich Race 3 – Won by Rimbaud.

Why: They went out moderately but flew home. This will be a lethal form race.

Horses to follow from the race:

  • Rimbaud – Had done all his racing in NSW prior to this. Obviously come back well and should be followed.
  • Impendor – Ran into a smart one first up. Started $3 so has shown ability in the past. Coming winner.
  • Glowlight – First start for new camp. Big run and will win shortly.

 Other Notable Horses:

Marble Nine – Won at Moe during the week. Both wins have rated well and should go to city grade now.

The Open – Flew midweek at Sandown-Hillside. At least a Saturday horse.

Elouyou – 2nd to the Open. Ready to win again.

Truffle Finder – Support in betting in the race won by The Open and ran well. Has to be followed.
