THE WEEKEND WRAP – Ben Clifton

 The Weekend Wrap

There was no Group 1 racing over the weekend but lets have a look back at some of the best performances.

Morphettville Race 2 – Won by Riche D’Amour.

Date: 22/06/24

Race Overview – They went out quick in this race but, more importantly, they also came home quick. Well inside standard with good margins. This race will be a potent formline.

  • Riche D’Amour – Massive figure to do on debut. This is a serious horse.
  • Halliwell – Another horse on debut who got back and ran home well. Up in trip and a decent jockey and she will be winning.
  • Grint – Shown ability at times and just needs to find the right race now. Will win races.

Flemington Race 3 – Won by Craig

Date: 22/06/24

Race Overview – They went quick early here but good margin to 4th and this race will be a good formline.

  • Craig – no prizes for finding this horse. My only query is whether the camp can step him up to the next level.
  • Rise At Dawn – Absolutely flying. Follow.
  • Red Galaxy – Only had 3 runs and keeps improving. It might not be this campaign but should turn into a good horse at some stage.

Maiden Winner of the Week:

Date: 17/6/24

Canterbury Race 1 – won by Wanaruah

Why: They went out very quick but last sectional was still ok for the day. Well inside standard and good margins.

Horses to follow from the race:

  • Wanaruah – Another good 2yo unearthed by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. The only negative is that it led around Canterbury and if they go to a bigger track like Randwick it may not suit.
  • French Ruler – This is where I get interested. A horse that is going to get over more ground, he made a long run around them. Will go well up to 1400m on a bigger track.
  • Straand Beauty – 3 wide no cover on a hot tempo. Had the nerve to keep kicking.

Other Notable Horses:

  • UUkhai – Impressive maiden winner in WA.
  • Prospector’s Pick – Another sandgroper who ran time when winning it’s maiden.
  • Etude – Impressive winner in Muswellbrook maiden.
  • Bretsal – Massive win at Lismore. Follow the 2nd horse Clubhouse too.
