Golden Slipper Review

Rosehill Meeting Review

Date: 23/03/24

Track: Soft 5

Rail: 2m

Race 1: Midway (BM72) – 1500m

Tempo: Inside standard for the class so tempo was solid.

Race Overview: Last sectional was good and good margins. Race has gone well for a Midway.

Elettica  ($5) – Was a drifter in betting but ridden much more positively from a better draw. Bolted in and can win better races than a Midway.

Danish Prince ($8.5) – Massive run. Sat outside the lead on a good tempo and kept kicking. Follow.

Last Word: Although only a Midway, I think winners can flow out of this race.

ELETTICA  was a drifter.

Race 2: Manion Cup – 2400m

Tempo: Strong tempo.

Race Overview: They have done it at both ends in this race. Out quick, home well and good overall time. Gone very well.

Post Impressionist ( $3.9) – It is just an auto bet when William Haggas brings one to Aus. Massive figure here and a complete moral if it backs up next week in the Tancred. If it goes to the Sydney Cup it’s a moral in that too.

Last Word: Winner was a different class to the rest.

POST IMPRESSIONIST  is a moral if it goes to the Sydney Cup.

Race 3: Epona Stakes – 1900m

Tempo: Solid enough tempo.

Race Overview: Race only gone fair. Inside standard but no margins.

Osmose ($2.90) –  Finally got her first win in Australia. Has come back in good form but needed absolutely everything to go in her favour to win. I’m against going forward.

Little Mix ($7) – Set an enormous task back in the field. This she is flying and can win at 2000m and beyond.

Last Word: Happy to avoid this race bar Little Mix.

OSMOSE  not keen.

Race 4: Darby Munro Stakes – 1200m

Tempo: Moderate tempo for the class.

Race Overview: I went into this race thinking it would rate well as there was some good up and coming horses but the overall time is slow, last sectional not much chop and margins not great.

Brave Mead ($4.40) – They have found the key to this horse keeping it to 1200m. Was massive last start against the bias and given a peach here to win. Little disappointed it hasn’t rated better but can’t have everything.

Schwarz ($6) – Rightfully out the gate in betting but stuck on well. Will be better over 1400m-1600m but think he has a ceiling despite being lightly raced.

Robrick ($3.80) – Off the map in betting but only slugged home. They kept it at 1200m which I’m not convinced suited it. Can improve up to 1400m.

Last Word: Shrewd bit of placement with Brave Mead.

BRAVE MEAD  was my best bet of the day.

Race 5: Ranvet Stakes – 2000m

Tempo: Absolute walk early.

Race Overview: Sprint home. The overall time was very slow but they ran good late sectionals which is likely to save the race as a race to follow.

Via Sistina ($2.30) – Pummelled in betting off its overseas form. Figure isn’t massive due to slow early tempo. There’s a bit under the bonnet and that was soft.

Place Du Carrousel ($6) – Not sure how she will beat Via Sistina but was a nice run.

Think It Over ($3.20) – Probably went a little slow out in front but was disappointing.

Last Word: Stopping short of saying Via Sistina will ‘just win’ the Queen Elizabeth as the figures just weren’t there.

VIA SISTINA  pummelled in betting.

Race 6: Rosehill Guineas – 2000m

Tempo: Slow in the middle stages.

Race Overview: Was a sprint home but race has rated solidly.

Riff Rocket ($2.7) – Market came to its senses in the last few minutes and smashed this good horse in to favouritism. Dirty ride by Rawiller got it home. He’s a star and will piss in in the Derby if he goes that way.

Tom Kitten ($3.30) – Give it a can of Whiskas and forget about it. Shown up in this race and happy to move on from him.

Last Word: I maintain that Riff Rocket is a genuine star. Has the Derby at his mercy.

RIFF ROCKET  is a star.

 Race 7: George Ryder Stakes – 1500m

Tempo: Solid tempo.

Race Overview: No margins and time only fair. Falls below the standard of a genuine G1 WFA contest.

Veight ($7) – Great ride by Lane and was the right horse at the right time. His greatest asset is his racing pattern in that he puts himself right there.

Lady Laguna ($8.5) – Proved that she could get out to this trip and that opens up options for connections.

Militarize ($5) – Solid run but he was weighed down by that junk Randwick Guineas form.

Think About It ($4.80) – Big run to sit outside the lead on a good tempo and battle on. Not convinced he’s a winning Doncaster chance though.

Last Word: The Randwick Guineas formline is complete junk.

VEIGHT  hammers home.

Race 8: Golden Slipper – 1200m

Tempo: Strong.

Race Overview: Ran inside standard time. Do think this will be a vintage year for 2yo’s so happy to follow the form.

Lady Of Camelot ($6.5) – Was the biggest run in the race in the Blue Diamond and the market didn’t miss it. Good filly.

Coleman ($41) – Another horse who had shown exceptional ability but failed miserably in the Blue Diamond. There’s a motor there.

Storm Boy ($2.60) – Nothing went right. Stepped slow and could never get to the right part of the track. Genuine star and think he will be potent leading over 1400m and 1600m. Don’t drop off.

Last Word: Storm Boy will win the Sires and the Champagne.

LADY OF CAMELOT  is a good filly.

Race 9: Galaxy – 1100m

Tempo: Moderate tempo.

Race Overview: Has proven a potent formline in previous years and think it will again.

Zapateo ($26) – We know what Zapateo is and this was her crowning moment. Hard to place from here.

Sunshine In Paris ($5.50) – Nearly a great training effort to get her to win first up. Genuine G1 horse.

Ozzmosis ($10) – Spat out by the market and was a disaster.

Last Word: Nothing from back in the field really made an impression so I would be forgiving of those horses.

Race 10: Birthday Card Stakes – 1200m

Tempo: Moderate early.

Race Overview: Sprinted home and race rated well.

Chain Of Lightning ($16) – Market found it in the early markets before a late drift coming out of a potent Oakleigh Plate formline. Blake Shinn is absolutely flying and the horse deserved this.

Olentia ($2.80) – Appeared to have every chance but I’m holding onto the SP as a reason to follow.

Last Word: Happy to follow in mares races going forward.
