Caulfield Meeting Review

Date: 10/02/24

Track: Good 4

Rail: True

Race 1: BM (100) – 2000m

Tempo: Went very slow in the early part of the race but upped the tempo from the 1000m

Race Overview: They took off early in this race so you had to sustain a long run and the horses in the back of the field couldn’t do it. There is margins from 3rd to 4th but time wasn’t flash and I don’t love the race.

Don’t Doubt Dory ($13) – Had the suck run in behind them and the way the race was run probably suited him. Starting price makes you wary of following him going forward.

Flash Feeling ($2.25) – Outside the lead and stuck on ok but disappointing given what price he started.

Last Word: At this class and distance range they take it in turns of winning. No standouts for me.

DON’T DOUBT DORY  took out Race 1.

Race 2: BM (78) – 2400m

Tempo: Strong early tempo but they really slowed down between the 1400m and 800m.

Race Overview: Definitely not for the feint hearted this race.

Wertheimer ($6.50) – Very solid in the market. Suited the way the race was run as had several runs at this trip this campaign. As good as he goes.

Galilaeus ($5) – Solid bounce back run after last start dismal showing. He’s pretty slow but keeps running. Can probably win a similar race in the coming weeks.

Divine Purpose ($4.4) – Strange tempo set with the mid-race slow down. Was a good run but not sure if they are better suited dropping back to 2000m and leading at a good clip?

Last Word: Much like the first race they take it in turns at this level.

WERTHEIMER  was solid in Race 2.

Race 3: BM (70) – 1600m

Tempo: Strong tempo.

Race Overview: Race has flown. Margins and times.

Another Wil ($1.85) – This horse is a star. Love the way the camp has brought him on slowly. He’s going to the top. Could be a Group 1 horse eventually.

Marble Arch ($10) – Went back from the wide gate but kept finding the line. Given how well the race has rated, he can win next start in this class.

Zamborghini ($9) – Like him as a horse. My concern is he might be getting to the end of his prep.

Last Word: The 2 horses (Georgie Get Mad and Vinnie’s Spirit) who settled near Another Wil in the run race 2nd last and last.

Horses to Follow: Another Wil

ANOTHER WIL  was the best bet of the day.

Race 4: Autumn Stakes – 1400m

Tempo: Slow early tempo.

Race Overview: Time was just outside standard but they did go slow early. Margins decent but I think it will be a case of the beaten brigade is not much good.

Snow Patrol ($9) – Massive rating to do off a spell. He’s got a chance but not convinced these are the best 3yo’s milers we have.

Southport Tycoon ($2) – Had a nice run just in behind them. Surprised something went past him as he let down well. Still think he’s horse.

Carbonados ($7) – Has been incredibly disappointing since first up win. Sack.

Last Word: I’m on the fence about these first 2 horses home. Just got the feeling there are going to be better 3yo’s in the Australian Guineas.

Race 5: Carlyon Cup – 1600m

Tempo: Very slow early tempo.

Race Overview: Was a sprint home but race has gone hopeless. Worried about this race as a formline.

Yonce ($3.40) – Got away with one here out in front. Good for the connections to get a win out of her after a long break but could be her last win.

Young Werther ($2.7) – Tempo didn’t suit. We know his level.

Last Word: Hate this race. Doubt the market finds these horses next start.

YONCE  was good to get a win for the connections.

Race 6: Blue Diamond Prelude C & G – 1100m

Tempo: Strong early tempo.

Race Overview: Visually very impressive but the Fillies race has come home better the last 400m.

Bodyguard ($4.20) – The big drifter in the market but was too good. Visually he has been very impressive at his first 2 runs. Think the Blue Diamond futures market has him about the right spot.

Stay Focused ($3.40) – Nice horse who had every chance.

High Octane ($2.30) – Market thought he was the best horse in the race and obviously had no luck. He won’t be coming out of the most desired formline going into the Blue Diamond but is a winning chance.

Last Word: I think the first 3 home are nice horses but the times didn’t quite match the visuals of this race.

BODYGUARD  was a big drifter in the market.

 Race 7: Blue Diamond Prelude F – 1100m

Tempo: Went a similar tempo to the colts.

Race Overview: Margins not there but times were better than the colts as they ran home better

Hayasugi ($8.50) – Soft in the market but showed improvement ratings-wise from her last start.

Kuroyanagi ($5.50) – Showed significant improvement from its debut run.

Bold Bastille ($2.10) – Leaders found it hard to lead in the chute races but was disappointing.

Last Word: Times say that this race has gone better than the colts but I’m not convinced.

KUROYANAGI  showed improvement.

Race 8: Rubiton Stakes – 1100m

Tempo: Got running from the 600m

Race Overview: I think the form will hold up from this race. Time was strong and margins ok.

Kallos ($13) – Huge figure that he has shown he can do previously. The problem with this horse is the ability to string together consistent performances like this. He runs up to this in the Oakleigh Plate he would win it but he is very hard to trust.

Asfoora ($1.80) – Good mare who carried the penalty in the weights here and ran well. Just ran into a horse who was feeling good on the day. Cherry ripe for the Oakleigh Plate.

Last Word: Don’t drop off Asfoora.

Horses to Follow: Asfoora.

ASFOORA  is cherry ripe for The Oakleigh Plate

Race 9: Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes – 1400m

Tempo: They went fast.

Race Overview: Given it is a kick off point for a lot of the better horses in the race then the race has gone fine.

Mr Brightside ($1.95) – These top class WFA horses just keep getting the job done. Probably not the ideal tempo for him given he was first up and didn’t jump well but really surged late. The benchmark for WFA horses in the country.

Pride of Jenni ($9) – I wasn’t sure about her WFA credentials despite her form at the end of last campaign. I’m convinced now. Will be competitive whatever she runs in.

Veight ($6) – Look, he ran ok but I highly doubt he can win the Australian Guineas. Not a fan.

Last Word: Mr Brightside has come back as well as ever.

MR BRIGHTSIDE  = Mint.

Race 10: Listed 3yo Fillies – 1100m

Tempo: Went a solid clip.

Race Overview: Went out fast and came home well. This is a race to follow.

Estriella ($3.90) – Has come back a different horse. Flown here and looks a legitimate Oakleigh Plate chance if they go that way.

Blanc De Blanc ($5) – Off a long break, market against and ran poorly. Sacked.

Last Word: Follow anything out of this race.

Horse To Follow: Estriella

Horses to Follow:

  • Estriella
  • Another Wil
  • Asfoora
