The Championships Day 1 Preview!

Massive Group 1 day featuring four of the best group ones in the country! The best are out to play as we kick off Day 1 of The Championships and here’s my top tips for the features.

Inglis Sires – 1400m 2YO-G1

Empire Of Japan was very good in The Golden Slipper and the rise in distance looks to suit greatly. Star jockey Zac Purton takes the ride, and he looks sensational on paper. As he has drawn wide, he will likely get back in the field and find a nice spot. With plenty of speed on he will get his chance to show his turn of foot which could allow for him to be running over the top of these late.

Don Corleone was strong in the Blue Diamond behind Little Brose followed by another very good effort in the Golden Slipper. Another horse that will benefit from the rise in distance and from barrier two should find a very handy spot just behind the leaders. Loves Randwick and should be capable of running another strong race.

Veight has been extremely impressive in his Pakenham maiden victory and his dominant Sires Produce win. Has won over 1400m but will need luck to cross. He has shown he has the class and versatility to step up to this level. Faces another big jump but looks well and truly capable of running another big race and looks a genuine place chance.

Cylinder was sound in the Golden Slipper and draws well to sit in the box seat. The rise in distance is a query but with James McDonald aboard he should be given every possible chance to run the seven furlongs. Each way chance.

T J Smith Stakes – 1200m WFA-G1

Nature Strip is looking to bounce back big time. He’s claimed the TJ three times and is the reigning champion and has a habit of bouncing back after being beat. Looked terrific in an exhibition gallop midweek and has placed 6 times second up. He deserves another chance and is the on top hope for me.

I Wish I Win has ran two eye catching races first and second up. Will go back from that wide draw, find no trouble and with plenty of speed on paper he should be storming over the top late. Has never missed the placings over this trip and should be going very close to winning. The main danger.

Private Eye is a second up specialist and I expect him to peak. Has placed 5 times over 1200m and boasts an impressive track and distance record. Finds himself well placed to run a massive race and is a genuine each way chance.

Giga Kick ran some moth watering sectionals first up and has had a solid tick over jump out since. Should be rock hard fit and ready to run a massive race with Zac Purton on board which is a huge positive. He’s one of the classiest horses in the race and will be in the finish.

The Doncaster Mile – 1600m Group 1

Mr Brightside claimed his All-Star Mile in what was a dominant display. He won this race last year and looks primed to go back-to-back. Won 8 times over this distance and is arguably in career best form. Best horse, best jockey and should be extremely hard to beat at very likeable odds.

Fangirl has been around the mark against Anamoe which puts her in good shape to be competitive. Loves Randwick and should be ready for 1600m after smashing the line last start. The main danger.

Zougotcha looks a good each way chance. Loves the track and has won over this distance beforehand and gets in with absolutely no weight. I think she’s capable of competing with the best and will get a good run just behind the pace.

Alligator Blood was ok in the All Star Mile. He’s ultra consistent and a winner but gets a big weight and will be doing a lot of work early to cross from that wide gate. Class will take him a long way but he is one for the exotics at such short odds.

ATC Derby – 2400m 3YO-G1

Sharp ‘N’ Smart has drawn wide but is the classiest horse in the field without a doubt. Has won over this distance and should be able to slot in and find cover from the very wide draw. Is the most genuine stayer in the race and that should be enough for him to claim this.

Mark Twain was solid in the NZ derby and looks to be a very promising stayer. He made up some very good ground from an average position and was strong enough late to make a very good claim.

Japanese Emperor draws well to get a very good run and can sit more positive. Looks a good place chance at odds.

Andalus is another one who brings NZ Derby form. Was a huge run there when nearly getting Sharp N Smart and could well be in with a chance to catch him. Has improved every start and can see him being ultra competitive. Genuine danger.
