Ipswich Cup Preview

The Brisbane Winter Carnival is coming to a close as we head to Ipswich on Saturday for the 2150m Ipswich Cup. This race looks to have plenty of value for punters. Here’s how I’ll be playing the 2023 Ipswich Cup!

Numerian was brave in the Q22 and was narrowly beaten in the Doomben Cup 2 starts prior. He clearly carries the best form into this race being competitive in Group 1 grade and has been weighted accordingly. Barrier 9 is a concern as there is plenty of pace from the inside stalls but class should carry him a long way in this race. He’s only missed the placings 5 times from 18 starts at this trip and is extremely well placed.

Desert Icon has been racing well in Sydney and has drawn well to get a soft lead. Has won 4 times over this trip and placed a further 5. Jimmy Orman takes the ride which is a massive tick and he should be able to control and dictate this race. Well placed and suited for a very strong showing making him the main danger.

Regal Lion’s first up run was poor but has never performed fresh. Last preparation he dominated second up at Sandown and rises in distance to a more suitable trip. The blinkers go back on for the first time since the ATC Derby where things didn’t go right but prior to that he was runner up in a Tulloch and Placed in a NZ Derby. The shades should make a massive difference in sharpening him up and help him return to his three-year-old form. Barrier 10 isn’t a problem as he will go back from that wide draw and will be one to watch flashing home late at odds.

Berdibek was good in the Lord Mayors Cup behind Without A Fight and Luncies. Has had 4 starts at the trip for 2 wins and a minor placing. Will be rock hard fit for this and should get a good tempo up front to benefit his chances. With luck he’ll be a major player.

Otyrar was good a couple of starts back and prior to that has always been consistent. Was plain last start but the drop back in distance should benefit him greatly. Will get a soft run from barrier one and will be working home late.

Seat Of Power has been good in this grade of late and is capable of another strong showing. The rise in distance will be a massive help as he’s only missed the placings once from 6 attempts at this trip. Should be up on the pace behind Numerian and will be working home strong late. One for the placings.

On top hope is Numerian, he’s the class in the race and on his recent form is capable of winning this. Berdibeck and Desert Icon look to fight out the minors with Otyrar and Regal Lions the value to watch.
