Golden Rose Preview

It’s Golden Rose day at Rosehill and the 3 year olds are set to do battle over 7 furlongs in what looks to be a mammoth battle in a race that’s produced some champions of the Australian Turf. The Slipper winner returns and looks to claim the Golden double or will it be the dual Group 1 winner Militarize add another feature to his name? Or will we see the filly Charm Stone do the near impossible and claim the Rose! Here’s my preview and best hopes for the 2023 Golden Rose.

Militarize looks well placed to add another Group 1 to his already impressive resume. First up was 5th behind Cylinder however, was doing his best work over the last 100 metres and through the line. Has had success over the distance and from the good draw should be getting a cosy run. Second up form is ok but the major positive is gaining the ride of Joao Moreira who’s won 2 from 2 aboard the colt. The only query is the good ground however, should be capable of a very strong showing here and wouldn’t be surprised if he turns the tables on Cylinder.

Shinzo beat Zaaki in his most recent trial and looks ready to fire fresh. Has drawn wide but will find cover midfield and should have backs to follow and an uninterrupted run in the straight. Ryan Moore returns to ride the colt and was strong in the slipper over the last furlong against Cylinder suggesting that he’s capable of running a strong 1400 metres. Loves Rosehill winning twice at the track and is a genuine contender.

Cylinder has just got there his previous two starts however in his last outing in the Run To The Rose was held up from the 400 to the 200 and quickened very well in the last 100 to show his class. His one run over 1400 was on rain effected ground and was shuffled too far back to have an impact and looks ready to make that step up this time. Will make his own luck on the pace and should get an uninterrupted run from that draw in the box seat. Class horse and is the one to beat here.

King Colorado was good enough when resuming in the Winx Stakes when beaten by 2.5 lengths by Fangirl and has trailed impressively since. Is a winner over 1400 and a group 1 winner over a mile. Will get a handy run behind some key runners and will be having the last look at them late. Genuine place chance.

Don Corleone was stuck wide first up and had some very handy 2 year old form behind horses that are well in the market. Can bounce back here and is well over the odds.

Moravia was good in the Run To The Rose just getting edged out by Cylinder. Has drawn well to lead again and if can dictate terms is a cheeky chance to run into the placings.

Encap has won over this track and trip and appreciates good ground. He’s never run a bad race and was dominant in the Ming Dynasty last start. Needs things to go right but is far from the worst here and can see him running into the finish.

Butch Cassidy had his chance last start and was only fair to the line. Is hard to entertain here.

Nadal was good here last start but will need luck to be competitive here. Gets back in the field and will be flashing home late but others are preferred.

Snapback has good decent form lines in his last preparation and won his maiden in convincing style first up this prep. Is a massive jump though and is hard to have here.

General Salute is far from the worst here and does gain the blinkers on for this assignment. Hard to have from the poor barrier.

Charm Stone has been dominant in her first and second up performances and looks like a very classy type. 1400 metres shouldn’t be a problem and has a very soft draw to sit and potentially lead or sit just behind them. Sectionals say she’s capable of upsetting the colts however has never been seen or tested running clockwise and has history against her with only one filly ever winning the race. Is an extremely classy horse regardless and is a threat to the colts here and a genuine winning chance.

On top hope is Cylinder I think the Godolphin camp is just scratching the surface with him and although is just doing enough at the current time has beaten most of these before and looks primed to do so again. Have Charm Stone in for second and the main danger the differing form lines and soft gate are very appealing, Militarize in for third and Shinzo in for fourth with Encap the next best for exotics players.
