THE PUNTING MONOLOGUE "AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS SPECIAL LISTEN

Blue Diamond Stakes Day Review

Date: 25/02/23

Rail: True

Track: Good 4

Race 1: Victoria Gold Cup – 2100m

Tempo: There was no speed on paper and that’s the way it turned out. They crawled.

Race Overview: This was a glorified barrier trial. 4 of the 6 runners were resuming and it was a good kick off point with a nice easy sprint home.

Right You Are ($1.55) – Everything in its favour and got the job done. That rating was a slight regression on its previous run and it was the 8th run of the campaign. Doubt there is any more improvement and would be against in a race with a bit more depth.

Vow And Declare ($7) – Did enough first up. Hard horse to place.

Last Word: Forgettable race.

Race 2: Angus Armanasco – 1400m

Tempo: Another where they went slow early.

Race Overview: Good margins and a good effort to run inside standard time after going slow early.

Shuffle Dancer ($3.1) – Just keeps going to another level. Market really strong on her late and was strong through the line. Nice horse and can get further.

Call Di ($4.8) – If anyone tries to tell you that Ollie is still at his best, tell them to watch this race. This horse mapped to lead or sit outside the lead on soft tempo, instead it was out the back getting held up. Terrible, terrible ride. Forgive.

Royal Merchant ($8.5) – On the back up and perfectly ridden. This was her chance.

Last Word:  Ollie verging on unbackable these days. Father Time remains unbeaten.

Race 3: Mannerism Stakes – 1400m

Tempo: Went a sharper tempo than the previous race.

Race Overview: Overall time was ok but they finished in a clump. Treat with caution.

Espiona ($4.6) – Solid in the market. Building a case that she is better the Melbourne way of going. I don’t think this is a sign that she will scale the heights once expected of her but she is going well.

Torogene ($4.4) – Solid first up run.

Turaath ($5) – Sacked forever.

Last Word: Although the time looks ok im worried about it as a form race.

Race 4: Zeditave Stakes – 1200m

Tempo: Went quick early.

Race Overview: There is bits and pieces coming out of this race. Time was slick.

Recommendation ($9) – I was against it coming off an all the way win at Canterbury but this was a good win. Outside the lead on a good tempo adds plenty of merit. Good horse.

Spacewalk ($2.7) – Panned out perfectly, nice run in behind, got the run when it needed it and only plugged. Very disappointing as the market wanted to be with it. Probably showed up its lack of heart in this.

Queen Of The Ball ($4.4) – Wide on a fast tempo. Forgive.

Last Word: Spacewalk is sacked.

Race 5: Autumn Classic – 1800m

Tempo: Really slowed up through the middle stages.

Race Overview: Turns out there was a bit of deadwood in this race and the horses who were most advantaged at the set weights came to the fore. Time was fair.

Pericles ($3.7) – Has put down a marker here. Came out of an awful race at previous start but the ease of the win and the improved rating gives it hope. Only 2nd up and can keep improving.

Mr Maestro ($5) – Made a little dash but run ended. Should peak at next couple of runs.

Ausbred Rising Sun ($9) – Handled the rise in class well but hard to see him turning the tables on the winner at any stage this campaign.

Last Word: Think it will be the winner only out of this race.

Race 6: Peter Young Stakes – 1800m

Tempo: Breakneck.

Race Overview: Messy race with the tearaway leader.

Steinem ($5.5) – Very very solid in the market. Off a shorter break than some of her rivals. Solid win in a strange race. Can’t really pick a hole in it.

Gold Trip ($6) – Out the gate in betting but suited by the tempo. Good return.

Keats ($21) – Did all the chasing but did have the fitness edge on a lot of his rivals. Ran well but massive drifter in betting and will get found out in the All Star Mile.

Surefire ($6) – Ordinary. Couldn’t possibly follow after that run.

Last Word: Strange race.

Race 7: Blue Diamond Stakes – 1200m

Tempo: They went quick here as expected in a G1.

Race Overview: Going into the race I thought it wasn’t strong, time was ok but I think you will have to pick and choose who to follow out of it.

Little Brose ($9.5) – I was worried about the Barber race that he was coming out of but was very solid in the market. Yet to run a bad race and he now has a decent rating on the board. Not sure it can win the Slipper though.

Don Corleone ($10) – Held up slightly but at the same time I don’t think he would’ve won the race. Nice horse.

Steel City ($5.5) – No luck. Has something about her.

Barber ($5.5) – Hadn’t put a decent rating down on paper and that caught up with him. Don’t know if he’s much good.

Brave Halo ($8) – Hasn’t panned out for it in Melbourne but ran well. Nice horse. Would love to see what it could do if J.Kah jumped on board.

Last Word: Still convinced Steel City/Don Corleone are the best horses coming out of the race.

Race 8: Futurity Stakes – 1400m

Tempo: Leisurely early tempo.

Race Overview: Tactical race and the market really found the winner.

Alligator Blood ($2.8) – Absolutely off the map and suited the way the race was run. Pulled away from them late. Obviously a leading chance in the All Star Mile. Great effort from the camp to get this horse back to this level.

I’m Thunderstruck ($3) – Just not a sit sprint horse which doesn’t suit at WFA racing. Needs a stronger tempo.

Mr Brightside ($4.4) – Yeah he ran home well late but just doesn’t have the ability to put himself into the race earlier. Pass mark.

Nugget ($8) – Meek performance. Not up to WFA.

Last Word: The market just homed in on the high percentage play in Alligator Blood.

Race 9: Oakleigh Plate – (1100m)

Tempo: They went like Oakleigh Platers here.

Race Overview: Well inside standard and this will be a hot form race.

Uncommon James ($9.5) – Loved how well he jumped and just put himself there. Great camp, great ride, very good horse and timed the preparation to perfection.

Lofty Strike ($7) – His time will come. Good horse.

Asfoora ($8) – Thought she was brave first up. Don’t know why they went first up into this race.

King of Sparta ($13) – Huge in the wrong part of the track but jockey didn’t have any other options.

Chain Of Lightning ($7) – I think she is going to be a G1 horse at 1400m.

Last Word: There will be plenty of G1 winners to come out of this race.

Horses to Follow

– Lofty Strike – He can stay in the horses to follow.

– Call Di – Give me a jockey change please

– Star Patrol – Thought he was very good in the Oakleigh Plate.

– Don Corleone – I reckon he might be the best horse out of the Blue Diamond
