It’s Lightning Stakes Day and the stars are set to light up the Flemington straight! The big guns are back and the Autumn Carnival is in full swing as we return to headquarters for this sprinting feature over the 1000 metres.
Nature Strip was ultra impressive in his jumpouts both in Sydney and Melbourne. He loves Flemington only missing the placings once out of his ten starts at headquarters and is a specialist over 1000 metres. His first up form is very good and is going to be extremely hard to beat with the little speed and average tempo that looks to be here. Will be looking to go one better in this year’s edition and is a clear on top pick.
Marabi is ultra consistent and is yet to run a bad race winning 7 out of 8. Her previous jumpout was impressive doing her best work late. Only concern is she might be looking for 1100-1200m as is untested over the 1000 but her first up record is perfect and should be right in the finish.
Coolangatta is coming off the back of an impressive win in a very hot trial doing it all very easily against Giga Kick and I Wish I Win. First up record is good and has performed down the straight in the past so shouldn’t be any concerns there. Is a genuine 1000 metre horse and will be fighting it out with Nature Strip and Marabi in the finish.
Baller was super at Flemington last spring and this seems like a good kick off point for the Queensland raider. His runs at Flemington were impressive and loves the straight and had a very good hit out at Doomben against good company before heading south. His fist up record is good, I’m just cautious of whether others will be too sharp for him over 1000 metres but he is a smokey place chance and one to watch.
I Wish I Win is another class horse resuming and will be hitting the line late. I believe he’ll want further, but he was sharp enough in his jump out behind Coolangatta to suggest he can kick off his preparation with a big run.
On top hope is the star Nature Strip. He is short but just looks the class horse in the race and is a straight track specialist. Coolangatta in for second with Marabi in for third and Baller to round out the top 4 with the other danger being I Wish I Win.
