THE PUNTING MONOLOGUE "AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS SPECIAL LISTEN

Australian Guineas Day Review

Date: 04/03/23

Track: Good 4

Rail: 2m

Race 1: 2yo Hcp (1000m)

Tempo: Went about standard in the early part of the race.

Race Overview: Time was just outside standard for the class and margins not great. Overall the race hasn’t rated that well and might need to pick the eyes out of it to find coming winners.

Princess Dulhallow ($8.5) – Although she didn’t rate through the roof it was a nice win. Has really good early speed and reckon she would be better suited around a bend. Can win more races.

Butch Cassidy ($5) – Strung up in traffic when needed to get going. Waterhouse horse so expect it to race closer to the speed next start. Has something.

Massira ($2.5) – Great market support. Meek performance. Need to see again.

Last Word:  Butch Cassidy looks a nice horse.

Race 2: Open Hcp (2500m)

Tempo: Strong tempo for the distance.

Race Overview: Time and margins were good. Solid form race going forward.

So Unusual ($3.3) – Very soft in the market after opening favourite. Not sure what the pot was but was impressive here. Got held up when his main dangers were out and running. Great effort. Good horse.

Youth Spirit ($4.2) – Classic Waterhouse set up when going up in trip. Can win next start.

Timour ($2.7) – I won’t say this much but I think the market may have overdone the Jamie Kah factor here. Looked to have every chance.

Last Word: Happy to follow these horses in similar races in the coming weeks.

Race 3: Open Hcp (1000m)

Tempo: Sat up a little early.

Race Overview: Outside standard but good margins.

Kallos ($3.1) – Gelded before this run and many people will point to that gear change as the reason for the win but this rating was nothing out of its pattern. Think it wins regardless of the status of his plums.

On The Lead ($3.8) – Was keen on this horse leading into the race. Ran well. Just a line chaser who ran up to his best.

Mamaragan ($6.5) – Had been well placed leading into this run but once back up in class he got found out. Limited beast.

Last Word:  Can follow first 2 home.

Race 4: 3yo Open (1000m)

Tempo: Went quick here.

Race Overview: Ran really sharp time. Should be a potent form line.

Arctic Fairy ($9.5) – Think she was in the right part of the track but was a brave effort. Nice filly. Should have plenty left in the tank.

Little Miss Kubi ($8) – Really like this filly. $11 into $8 and went well. Can win again.

Wild Belle ($3.1) – Probably in the wrong part of the track. Solid in the betting and would be willing to forgive.

Lady Laguna ($12) – Got tired with big weight first up. Best of the on-pace horses. Think she can win a race soon.

Last Word: This race can be followed with confidence.

Race 5: Bm84 (1600m)

Tempo: Solid.

Race Overview: Time was good and margins were good but don’t feel like there is a lot of upside on these horses.

Munhamek ($4) – Getting deep into his campaign but got the tempo to suit and blended in at the right time. Suppose he can keep going.

Kettle Hill ($3.8) – Every possible. Limited.

Sparkle ($7) – Only battled. Every chance.

Last Word: Everything checks out in regards to time but I am just not excited about this race.

Race 6: Inglis Sprint (1200m)

Tempo: Went quick in front.

Race Overview: They have flown here. Great time, great margins, great formline.

Benedetta ($6) – Wow. G1 horse if I have ever seen one. Showed an electric turn of foot off a hot tempo. Got the lot.

Paris Dior ($11) – Probably not in the best part of the track. Follow.

Insurrection ($10) – Solid effort.

Last Word: A lot of jockeys were happy to go to the inside in the straight with very little success.

Race 7: Australian Guineas (1600m)

Tempo: Just an even tempo.

Race Overview: Time only fair, no margins and massive SP on the third horse have me worried about this race.

Legarto ($6.5) – Absolutely smashed late in betting in a market that was looking for the alternate formline to what the main horses were coming through.

Attrition ($7) – Yeah he was wide but tempo was only fair and had first access to the best part of the track. Good effort and will only improve.

Jacquinot ($2.7) – I raised questions about his ability to run a mile in the Punters Monologue. Had to go a long way back but I just think he is a better 1200m horse sitting back off a hot tempo. There was enough softness late in the betting to have backers worried.

Last Word: Very, very worried about this race.

Race 8: Blamey Stakes (1600m)

Tempo: Very strong.

Race Overview: Happy to follow this race as they ran solid time.

Nonconformist ($19) – I really missed a trick here. All his recent form had been in very strong G1 races. Back to a suitable class on the minimum. Little bit of specking late suggested someone found it. Come back well.

Pounding ($10) – Just keeps raising the bar. Surely the end of the campaign is close?

Gentleman Roy ($3) – Was keen on this horse leading in. Some talk that it had a setback between runs and had missed some work but wasn’t ridden as if it was lacking fitness. Disappointing whatever way you spin it.

Tuvalu ($4.4) – Outside the lead on a good tempo. Entitled to fold but also entitled to do more. Worried.

Last Word:  Happy to follow this race.

Race 9: Bm90 (1200m)

Tempo: Very soft tempo in the early stages.

Race Overview: A couple of scratchings really robbed this race of its quality. Time was slow

Sessions Road ($10) – D’Jumbuck form holds up here. Nice win.

It’sourtime ($4.2) – Becoming a non-winner. Should have fitness improvement to come.

Last Word: Forgettable race. Winner probably reiterates how good the D’Jumbuck formline is.

Horses to Follow

· Benedetta – No prizes for finding her

· Paris Dior – Good margin to 3rd in the Benedetta race.

· Lady Laguna – Bit of a hidden run.
