All Star Mile Day Meeting Review

Date: 18/03/23

Track: Moonee Valley

Going: Good 4

Rail: True

Race 1: Vobis Gold (1000m)

Tempo: Decent speed considering they were having the first look at the wind.

Race Overview: Right on standard for the class. Margins not great but not potting the race.

Midwest ($2.15) – Very well placed back to the 1000m around the Valley. He is no world beater, but his early speed and racing pattern make him a high % play every time he goes around.

Mynumerouno ($5.5) – Great effort off a long break. Will end up the best horse out of the race and was a really good run to kick off the campaign. Big drifter in the market so I suspect there is plenty to come in terms of fitness.

Scissor Step ($4) – The disappointment of the race. First start for new camp and was ordinary. Firmness in the market is the only positive.

Last Word: Mynumerouno is the one to follow from the race.

Race 2: BM70 (1200m)

Tempo: Sat up mid-race which got some horses over racing.

Race Overview: No margins, time only fair. Limited bunch.

Vongole ($7.5) – Deep into its campaign. But goes well at the Valley. Will always be competitive in this sort of grade.

Fearless Writer ($5) – Solid in the market. The horse with the most scope in the race. Ran well.

In Her Stride ($4.6) – Can’t jump over them but there was no need to claim in this race. Looking for a pilot change next start.

Blood Oath ($11) – Only one of the on-pacers to do anything. Had merit.

Last Word:  Not many of these are going on to better races but form out of it should be ok.

Race 3: Mystic Journey (2040m)

Tempo: Went quick here.

Race Overview: Great margins, time was good.

Queen Air ($2.9) – Remained really solid in the market despite the continued support for the favourite. Did things wrong, ran time, great margins. Great win.

Summerbeel ($1.85) – Expected to lead but never looked like it. I liked it before the race, but you could’ve given me $1001 once it didn’t lead and I wouldn’t have taken it.

Last Word: There is a sinking feeling when a Waterhouse/Bott horse, that you have backed, doesn’t lead. Tear up your ticket.

Race 4: Vobis Gold 3yo (1600m)

Tempo: Slow tempo early.

Race Overview: Awful time, no margins. Yuck.

Bel Air ($4.2) – In the bin in betting and rightfully so. Does a lot wrong and not convinced there is much in the tank. This may be the pinnacle of its career.

Russian Dancer ($4.4) – Held up but don’t get sucked into the unlucky run.

Toronto Terrier ($2.7) – Really well backed. Was 1200m up to 1600m and caught wide. No doubt unlucky but hard to follow given how bad the race has gone.

Last Word:  This race was putrid.

Race 5: Mugatoo (1600m)

Tempo: Moderate early but Rambler Rebel took off early.

Race Overview: About on standard for the class.

Munhamek ($1.7) – Didn’t have favours but was way too good. Flying.

Horrifying ($26) – I think he is going well just hasn’t been in a suitable race yet this campaign.

Quality Time ($5.5) – Did enough when resuming. Waller generally peaks them 3rd up.

Last Word: Think we can pick the eyes out of this race.

Race 6: Abell Stakes (1200m

Tempo: Went quick.

Race Overview: Tricky to analyse due to the fall. Margins and time were ok.

She’s All Class ($8.5) – Really specked in betting. Suited by the tempo and got a smooth run into it.

In The Boat ($4.6) – Signs of life here. Outside the lead, into the wind, on a good tempo. Good run.

Doull ($8.5) – Wouldn’t drop off him. He could drop in class and win.

Lady Of Honour ($4.4) – Thought it was way under the odds. 1400m horse not suited by the fast tempo. Do not jump off.

Last Word: Think there will be coming winners out of this race.

Race 7: All Star Mile (1600m)

Tempo: Strong tempo as you would expect in a race like this.

Race Overview: The cream rose to the top. First 3 home were rails in run.

Mr Brightside ($6.5) – Just had a sense of timing about him in this race. Appreciated the fast tempo and got off the rail at the right time. Great ride, great timing of prep by the trainers. A plan well executed.

Alligator Blood ($2.7) – I was completely against this horse in the Punters Monologue on Thursday. Was coming off a soft tempo first up to a likely fast tempo 2nd up. Once it didn’t lead it was all over.

Gentleman Roy ($31) – I reckon this was a really good run. Outside the lead on a hot tempo and had the audacity to kick clear. Not sure where it goes but I think it went well here.

I’m Thunderstruck ($6.5) – I absolutely loved the ride here. Horse could be cactus.

Last Word: I have been critical of the Hayes camp the last couple of years but they are winning me over. A well-timed prep.

Race 8: Typhoon Tracy (1200m)

Tempo: Breakneck

Race Overview: Went out hard and slugged home. They were entitled to get past the leader.

Parisal ($4.4) – All honours. Huge effort. Nice filly.

My Bella Mae ($3.7) – Outside the lead on a hot tempo. Forgivable run but could’ve been a gut buster. I’m happy to forgive in this instance.

Paris Dior ($4.80) – Awful.

Last Word: Parisal and My Bella Mae the ones to follow.

Race 9: Alister Clark Stakes (2040m)

Tempo: Slow early tempo.

Race Overview: Absolutely disgraceful race. Awful times, no margins.

Bank Maur ($7.5) – Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to Bank Maur, Happy Birthday to you. Hip Hip Hooray!

Amenable ($3.6) – Limited animal.

Last Word: Rocks in your head if you are thinking about following anything out of this race.

Race 10: Bm80 (1600m)

Tempo: Fast.

Race Overview: They are restricted horses but they ran ok time. There will be winners out of it.

Yulong Patrol ($34) – Absolute peach of a ride and needed it to win. Potting next start.

British Columbia ($4.8) – Had no right to be in the finish. Great run.

Last Word: Was a little messy but can follow British Columbia.

Horses To Follow

· Queen Air – Hard to miss but flew.

· Horrifying –Reckon he is going really well just hasn’t been in a suitable race yet.

· Lady Of Honour – plenty will jump off after that run. It wasn’t her go on Saturday so stick with her.

· Mynumberuno – Come back well.

· Gentleman Roy – I don’t know where he heads but I reckon he was huge. He will make the grade one day.
